Our method
Back to Eden gardening, adapted for Central Texas.
We were deeply shaped by the Back to Eden documentary, Paul Gautschi's decades of work showing that gardens flourish when we cooperate with how God designed the soil to work, instead of fighting against it.
Watch Back to EdenThe techniques we learned from Back to Eden.
Deep wood-chip covering
A thick blanket of arborist wood chips on top of the soil, the foundation of the Back to Eden method. It locks in moisture, smothers weeds, and slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down.
No-till, living soil
We don't rototill or strip your yard. Instead we build the soil up in layers, compost, mulch, and time, so the underground life (worms, fungi, microbes) does the heavy lifting for us.
Natural moisture retention
Because the mulch acts like a sponge, the soil underneath stays evenly damp far longer than bare ground, drastically reducing how much you have to water, especially during Austin summers.
Cover and compost everything
Bare soil is never the goal. After every harvest we re-cover the bed with compost and chips so the soil keeps building, year after year.
Work with the seasons
Cool-weather crops in fall and winter, heat-tolerant varieties in summer. Following Central Texas's natural rhythms rather than fighting them.
Minimal inputs, maximum life
No synthetic fertilizers or harsh sprays. Healthy soil grows healthy plants, and healthy plants resist most pests on their own.
